"One of Us Is Not Like the Others" is the third episode of the first season of One Of Us Is Lying, and the third episode of the series overall. It was released on October 7, 2021.
Synopsis[]
The “Bayview Four’s” secrets start to drop; Cooper faces the biggest.
Plot[]
The episode opens with a flashback of Cooper with Keely who provides assistance around Bayview High School on first day at school. On the guide Cooper bumps into Simon and Keely tells him to steer clear of Simon.
On the morning Addy's infidelity towards Jake is revealed on About That. She quickly loses her popularity at school and is kicked out of her clique and cheerleading squad. Bronwyn is initially blamed by Addy for posting her secret on About That.
After the bells Addy goes to class but straight away run out, TJ goes after her and explains to her how he has had a crush on her since ninth grade. Jake walk in on them catches in the corridors and attacks TJ, Cooper breaks up the fight. Addy is forced to admit the truth of the affair to Jake and Vanessa.
The latest About That post reveals Nate's secret. He sold drugs to a junior who subsequently OD’d. Nate and Addy are the first to arrive to the Bayview Four's secret meeting spot and get high together. Since Bronwyn and Cooper are the more squeaky-clean of the two, the judging begins when they arrive. They start blaming each other.
At dinner, Bronwyn rushes to Maeve's room to search for the hospital go-bag after Maeve has an unexpected nosebleed at the dinner table. Simon's laptop is discovered in Maeve's possession as she is looking for her hospital go-bag.
At school, Bronwyn tells Nate of her discovery in Maeve's room and he tells her that she has to do the shitty thing and walks away. While talking with his clique a flashbacks of Cooper and his agreement with Keely to keep up the ruse of their relationship is shown. Meanwhile, Cooper is posted on About That which claims that he might be using drugs to enhance his athletic abilities.
Bronwyn and Nate work together to carry out the task in Maeve's room, but they find out that the laptop is missing. Bronwyn contacts her mother to ask if she can get anything for Maeve by the house, but her mother informs her that her father has retrieved the laptop, allowing Maeve to "do her homework" while waiting for her test results. While searching Nate also finds pictures of Janae, Maeve and Simon in her room. Bronwyn tries to sneak out Nate but her father catches them and he grounded Bronwyn.
Addy steals Janae's phone and reads her messages with Simon and while reading the conversations between Janae and Simon she gets calls to the principal office where is set to tell who started the fight and she says to principal Gupta that TJ started the fight. TJ get three weeks of suspension.
In the yard, Cooper and his father who makes implications about Cooper move from Minnesota and asks him indirectly if he is guilty of doping, as the About That post claims. Cooper's whole family's financial future is dependent on his baseball performance, which is an issue since breaking up Jake and TJ's fight injured his shoulder, and he furiously throwing baseballs in the yard wall made it worse. A flashback shows that Simon knows about Cooper’s sexual orientation as well.
Cooper get anxious as he sees Nate at Kris' door and hides in the closet but Nate notice the Bayview's Wildcats hoodie on Kris' bed. Bronwyn confronts Maeve about Simon's laptop in the hospital, but she explains that she has been using it to try to prevent the secrets from dropping onto the app. She does notify Bronwyn, however, that the recent post is about her, and she was unable to prevent it from dropping onto the app.
The next day at school, Evan tells her that he doesn't care about the post. Nate gives her a burner phone so they can communicate privately, and Addy informs Nate that she snooped on Janae's phone. She informs Bronwyn that Janae's last messages to Simon also indicate that she believed he was going too far with About That and that she wanted him to shut it down.
Outside, Cooper tries to buy painkiller pills from Nate, but he refuses and Cooper informs him about his family issues as he walks away. Nate continues to inform him that he doesn't sell painkillers and Cooper angerly walks away. Addy retreats to the bathroom after Jake asks if she killed Simon, where she finds Janae crying. It's an eye-opening discussion for Addy, who seemed to have been completely unaware of the impression she made at school.
At home, Maeve confesses to Bronwyn that she had a fling with Simon and was in love with him, and that she took his laptop to check if he had anything on her and to figure out why he ghosted her after Bronwyn showed her the photo. Later, at school Nate still sells the painkillers to Cooper before his game and tells Cooper that doesn’t usually sell painkillers because they ruined his dad’s life, and he and Cooper share a nice moment. Cooper performs well in his game. After the game, Kris who went to support him had to watch Cooper smooch Keely. Cooper confronts Kris as he goes to his car, and the two have a not-so-nice chat. Kris believes that Cooper isn't only in the closet for baseball, but is completely in the closet, and Kris, who has always been himself, is confused. Kris also admits that he is always falling for the wrong men. Detective Wheeler watches the exchange from afar with an inquisitive smirk on her face.
Bronwyn is forced to explain to her family that the accusation is true, that she stole the chemistry exam questions to avoid ruining her college chances, thanks to her honest conversation with Maeve about her constant pretence of perfection. However, her parents tell her that she must continue to lie in order to protect her reputation.
Bronwyn calls Nate on her new burner towards the end of the episode. He tells his pet lizard, Stan, that he knows picking up will only cause more trouble. However, she calls him again, and this time he answers.
