"One of Us Is Grieving" is the second episode of the first season of One Of Us Is Lying, and the second episode of the series overall. It was released on October 7, 2021.
Synopsis[]
The Bayview Foursome go to Simon’s wake and become official suspects in his murder.
Plot[]
The second episode begins with Addy and Jake, who appear to have a supportive relationship. Addy appears to be particularly reliant on Jake, who calms her down on a regular basis. She admits to being concerned about students at the school suspecting her of murder, and she continues to be anxious. Cooper, on the other hand, has a secretive relationship with Kris. Bronwyn waits for Nate at school and accuses him — though indirectly — of taking Simon's bag and laptop.
At lunch, Addy, Jake, Cooper, Keely, TJ, and Vanessa are attempting to have a lighthearted discussion about the situation at school, but what appear to be offhanded jokes gradually become outright accusations for some. In AP Physics, Addy has flashbacks of her getting detention due to an alarm she didn't realize she had set.
The detective summons Addy, along with Nate, Bronwyn, and Cooper, to have their lockers searched. Addy becomes concerned and starts to question what may happen if something was planted inside their lockers. Addy has a small vial of peanut oil in her locker, which she claims is part of her makeup, and her ready-made excuse for how refined peanut oil must be in order to trigger someone's allergies only makes her look more guilty. Simon's laptop is the next thing on the agenda. Wheeler presses the Bayview Four to admit it if they know anything, but Bronwyn, in a panic, tries to shift the focus back to Addy's moisturizing peanut oil.
Detective Wheeler tells them that they found peanut oil in Simon’s and capsule residue, which means someone in the room put it in his cup. At home, Bronwyn's parents get her legal counsel, Ann asks Addy if Jake's family know one and if she and Jake are okay. Bronwyn is advised by her legal counsel to stay away from the other suspects, especially Nate. Cooper begins to vent about his AP English teacher at Kris', and Kris, who believed Cooper was in college, discovers Cooper has been lying about his age and tells him to get dressed.
In gym class, Addy starts to pick apart Cooper relationship with Keely, intimating that maybe Simon had discussed that she cheated on him at Jake's party. Simon’s wake looms on the horizon. Jake is on the guest list because he has a long-standing childhood connection with him, and he casually suggests to Addy that he might come upon the diary Simon maintained when they were kids — only now, it would contain everyone's secrets.
In the bathroom, Bronwyn asks Addy how she got detention and Addy tells her that an alarm on phone that she didn’t set. Nate informs Bronwyn that his locker was jammed and that he was late for AP Physics. Cooper’s phone missing which made him late for AP Physics. The next post on About That reveals that Addy had the peanut oil in her locker.
At Simon’s wake, Addy is almost caught snooping around Simon's belongings by Detective Wheeler. Addy, who is hiding beneath the bed, overhears Wheeler explain that the peanut oil in her locker isn't a match, and that the police are investigating a theory that all four students conspired in Simon's murder. Janae walks out when Simon's mother starts to speak about him, she lands in a room with Maeve and they have a conversation about him.
Meanwhile, Bronwyn gathers them all in Simon's room to talk about what's going on, and they realize someone is attempting to frame them. Addy also informs them that the police believe they killed Simon together and that they are unable to be seen together, before exiting the room. Outside, Bronwyn is approached by Evan, who informs her that he covered for her by telling her father that she went to the bathroom when he was seeing her with Nate. He tells her that he doesn't want Nate to bring her down with him, and that she is deserving of nothing but the best. She gets closer to him and tells him that he is right and kisses him.
Inside, Keely reminds Cooper that they have a deal that prevents them from seeing anyone. Addy gets a flashback of Simon approaching her at a Jake's party and revealing that he is aware of her affair with TJ. Back in the present, she continues to become more anxious, to the point where even Jake suspects something is wrong. She admits that she was the one who started the rumor about Keely cheating on Cooper.
Bronwyn sets up a more private meeting at an old theater, where she recommends that they all work together. Bronwyn admits that one of Simon's posts would be about her, but she won't tell which one, and Addy admits to cheating on Jake when things get heated. Miss Avery, who despised not only Simon but all of them, is their first suspect. Later that night, AbouThat posts Addy's secret of cheating on Jake while he was on vacation in Greece. In the closing scenes, Maeve is seen in her room, using Simon's laptop.
